Biography

Osamu Goto, born on November 27, 1948, in Tokyo, Japan, is a distinguished mechanical engineer renowned for his significant contributions to Formula 1 racing. After earning his degree from Tokyo's Metropolitan College of Aeronautical Engineering in 1970, he joined Honda's research department, focusing initially on exhaust emissions. In the mid-1980s, as Honda intensified its involvement in Formula 1, Goto transitioned to the racing division. He played a pivotal role in developing Honda's turbocharged engines, which powered teams like Williams and McLaren to multiple Constructors' and Drivers' Championships. Notably, under his leadership, Honda achieved remarkable success with the McLaren-Honda partnership, securing four consecutive Constructors' titles from 1988 to 1991. Following Honda's withdrawal from Formula 1, Goto joined Ferrari in 1993 as head of engine research and development, contributing to the team's engine advancements. In 1997, he became head of the engine department at Sauber Petronas Engineering AG. After his tenure in Formula 1, Goto founded Geo Technology in 2006, an engineering consultancy specializing in high-performance powertrains for the automotive and motorcycle industries.
